In a small, family-owned restaurant in Hilo on a rainy night, we decide on the Bananas Flambe with Macnut Ice Cream for dessert (to share, of course). The waiter arrives, pours brandy over the concoction, and lights it on fire. As the glow falls over the table, instead of his face, I see my brother Jon’s face. He’s been gone for five years, and I suddenly miss him terribly and wish he were still among us. But, here, in this improbable place, I see him once again, preparing for us his favorite dessert, eyes glowing as he strikes the match.
